RideLondon – STEM for SLGS

In our effort to raise funds for the STEM projects at SLGS, we sought to enroll a team of volunteers who would willingly participate in this year’s RideLondon event. Applications were open on our website prior to the event date to allow interested alumni and friends to apply. Out of the applicants, 10 were selected to represent team Regentonian at the event. This year, RideLondon took place on Sunday 29 May 2022 with “a new format, exciting new routes and a new partnership with Essex County Council.” At the center of this celebration of all things cycling was the RideLondon-Essex 100 – a unique opportunity for anyone and everyone to ride 100 miles on traffic-free roads through the heart of London and the neighbouring countryside of Essex. Previous editions of this event had the starting and finish lines in London with a loop of Surrey in between. Thus, this brand new route through Essex made this year’s event exciting and challenging, hence SLGS’ reason to take the opportunity to raise funds for STEM projects at the School. 10 volunteer riders on Team Regentonian rode to raise a minimum target of £500. 4 of these riders were alumni of the School and the remaining riders were friends and supporters of this charitable cause. Each rider was expected to complete the 100 miles distance. At the end of the event, a total of £6,000+ was raised! Each rider was presented with a certificate of completion and medal from the organisers of RideLondon as well as a certificate of appreciation from the SLGS Alumni Association. We appreciate all our riders and, in no particular order, would like to thank Ibrahim Kabia, Ricky Broomfield, Corey Johnson, Jozsef Barna, Femi Anthony (SLGS alumnus, USA), Ronald Johnson (SLGS alumnus, USA), Katib Iscandari (SLGS alumnus, UK), Alex Kamara (SLGS alumnus, Abu Dhabi), Akinetoye Williams and Anthony Oloyede. We are planning for a bright future, embedding STEM learning at SLGS. All of this is dependent on the continuous belief and investment of the school’s donors. Our science facilities are currently in desperate need of renewal and the state of the art plans we have to update them simply won’t happen without the vital donations we receive.
