RideLondon 2024

In May 2023, a team of volunteers took up the challenge of riding the capital’s gruelling RideLondon event, as a means of raising funds for the STEM projects at SLGS. The event took place on Sunday, May 28th, winding through the heart of London and the neighbouring countryside of Essex.

One of the most popular cycle events in Europe, Ride London allows participants to choose one of 4 distinct courses to match their experience and stamina. The RideLondon-Essex 100 is the event’s flagship race and, as the name suggests, takes place over a challenging 100 mile route from Central London to Braintree in Essex, and back again. The shorter 60 mile route extends as far as Essex’s picturesque Epping Forest. The 30 mile alternative edges past East London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, before dipping into Essex via Woodford and back again. All routes conclude at the iconic Tower Bridge, on the River Thames. There is a fourth option, the FreeCycle, in which riders get the opportunity to explore a completely traffic-free route through the landmark-filled centre of London. This option is open to all ages and abilities, and is completely free to enter.

At the end of the 2023 event, 32 Team Regentonian riders successfully completed the course, over the event’s 4 different courses. 18 riders conquered the 100-mile race, 12 riders completed the 60-mile race and 3 riders completed the freecycle.

Together, our riders raised an incredible £20,100 for SLGS – an invaluable amount that makes a huge difference in our continuing work modernising the school. All of the successful riders were recognised at a dedicated barbecue, where they had a chance to show off their medals!

So any cycle-mad alumni or friends of the school, put the date in your diary and get on your bike for Sierra Leone’s bright future!

The £20.1k raised will be used to support STEM efforts at SLGS, with projects including the recently completed refurbishment of our ICT labs and the proposed rebuilding of our science block; campus-wide WiFi and remote learning capabilities; and extensive digital learning training for our faculty.

We are planning for a bright future, embedding STEM learning at SLGS. But the impact of our fundraising extends beyond the limits of the school itself. By combining efforts with our sister institution, Annie Walsh Memorial School, we have been providing STEM courses for both male and female students during weekends and school holidays. The addition of digital learning and online teaching at SLGS puts us in the best possible position to share our knowledge resources and teaching models with other schools in the region. In time, we hope to become a vital hub of STEM, ICT and world class learning in West Africa, producing world class learners with globally impactful skillsets – and that journey begins now. All of this is dependent on the continuous belief and investment of the school’s donors.

Back to the present. Our science facilities are currently in desperate need of renewal and the state of the art plans we have to update them simply won’t happen without the vital donations we receive. If you would like to support this worthy cause,  please donate here
